Ralph Lauren was born in New York City in 1952.  He had no formal training in fashion, but began designing neckties while working as a salesman for a tie manufacturer.   Lauren sold his neckties under the Polo name, and soon expanded his company to men's casual wear and sportswear.  His wide ties singlehandedly changed the prevailing style.   Within a few years, Lauren had expanded to womenswear as well.
The polo player logo is one of the most famous in modern fashion.   "These are normal clothes that are easy to wear, clothes that a woman wants to keep.  The woman I design for is not interested in trends."  Ralph Lauren
Lauren's clothes are inspired by English nobility, the Ivy League, and the American West; and are known for a classy yet casual, preppy look.  He modernizes the traditional fashions of the American and British wealthy.
Lauren has expanded broadly in design beyond clothing, offering fragrances as well as home products from furniture to linens to silverware to paint.
Lauren designed the costumes for the films The Great Gatsby and Annie Hall.  Lauren has won 7 Coty Awards, the Council of Fashion Designers of America Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year Awards, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America LIfetime Achievement Award, among his numerous honors.
In 2006, he became the first Official Outfitter of Wimbledon.
