Featured Designers - Guy Laroche

Guy Laroche was born in France in 1921.  He began in fashion by working for a milliner, and in 1949 was hired by the couture house of Jean Desses, where he evenutally became Desses' assistant.   On behalf of Desses, Laroche traveled to New York to study fabrication methods for ready-to-wear clothing, in order to incorporate these into Desses' diffusion lines.
Laroche opened his own design house in 1957, and expanded from couture into ready-to-wear in 1960.  Within a few years, he expanded into perfumes and men's clothing.
Laroche was renowned for fine cutting and tailoring, and his early work was highly influenced by Balenciaga's stylings.  Laroche sought to make couture practical for women, and was one of the first high-fashion designers to use separates.   Laroche's clothes were especially popular among younger and career women, because they were fresher and younger looking than couture from most other designers.
Laroche received the Chevalier de l'Order de la Legion d'Honneur in 1987, and died in 1989.  Michael Klein became head designer for the firm in 1994, and held that position until 2004, when he was replaced by Herve Leroux.

Under Klein, the house of Laroche moved from haute couture into couture ready-to-wear, where expensive fine clothing is designed and tailored to be sold off the rack rather than fitted to the buyer.
