Featured Designers - Gucci
Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci as a saddlery shop in Florence, Italy in 1906.  By the early 1920s, he had branched out into leather handbags and luggage, and then shoes.
Gucci adopted equestrian motifs for many of his products (the trademark green-red-green webbing design is based on a saddle girth), and his leather goods were known for their high-quality craftsmanship.
Guccio Gucci brought his 4 sons, Aldo, Rodolfo, Ugo, and Vasco, into the business.  Upon Guccio Gucci's death in 1953, Aldo and Rodolfo initially split management of the company, with Aldo being responsible for its international expansion.
It was Aldo Gucci who designed the interlocking double G trademark.  Gucci handbags, accessories, and clothes became a major status symbol in the 1950s and 1960s, as they were photographed on fashion icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Princess Grace, and Elizabeth Taylor.   During the 1970s and 1980s, feuding between branches of the Gucci family and an overemphasis on licensing of products with the Gucci name caused a downturn in the company's sales and financial position, but the House of Gucci enjoyed a resurgence in the 1990s under the design leadership of Tom Ford.   Ford's designs were sexy, bold, and body-conscious, and made Gucci once again the talk of the fashion world.  Ford himself became a superstar - even being named to People magazine's "50 most beautiful people" list.  Ford has left Gucci, and Frida Giannini now leads its design team.
