Featured Designers - Givenchy
Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy was born in 1927.  Givenchy studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and began designing for Jacques Fath in 1945.   Givenchy moved on to design for Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong, and Elsa Schiaparelli before he opened his design house in Paris in 1952.  Givenchy rapidly gained a following for his separates, which were new to Paris fashion.
In 1954, Givenchy became the first high fashion designer to produce a ready-to-wear line.  His work was heavily influenced by the crisp, precise tailoring and styling of Cristobal Balenciaga, who regarded Givenchy as a protege.
Givenchy designed the costumes for Audrey Hepburn in her films, beginning with Sabrina - Givenchy's work on Sabrina was uncredited and Edith Head received an Oscar in costume design for the film.  Givenchy became Hepburn's designer for her personal wardrobe, and his fame grew as she became a fashion icon.
Givenchy was also a favorite designer of fashion legends such as Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the Duchess of Windsor.
Givenchy and Balenciaga collaborated to introduce the "sack" silhouette.
Givenchy's clothes are known for clean, simple lines and elegant silhouettes.
Givenchy was knighted a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur.   Givenchy retired in 1995, and the head designer position at the house of Givenchy has been held since then by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and Julien MacDonald, among others.
After Givenchy's retirement, he was commissioned to help restore the gardens at Versailles.
