Christian Dior was born in 1905.  After his schooling, he opened an art gallery, and after that closed, became a sketch artist for couture designers.
In 1947, Dior premiered his first line, and 2 years later opened his design house under his own name.  Dior's designs established what became known as the "New Look," stressing a curvaceous femininity.   The flowing fabrics with boned bodices, small waists, and long skirts were reminiscent of the Belle Epoque era, and were immediately very popular, as wartime rationing was ending.
Dior received the Neiman-Marcus Award in 1947.  Dior's commercial instincts and business organization set him apart from other couture houses, as he diversified broadly (and opened boutiques around the world) and pioneered royalties for licensing payments for products bearing the couturier's name.
During the 1950s, Dior created the sack dress and A-line dress.  Christian Dior became the most prestigious couture house in Paris, which was then the world's fashion capital, and attracted extremely talented assistants, including Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent.
Dior died in 1957, and the head designer position passed to his assistant, Yves Saint Laurent.  After Saint Laurent left, Marc Bohan became the head designer for almost 30 years.  Bohan was succeeded by Gianfranco Ferre, who was succeeded by John Galliano.   Galliano remains the head designer at Dior to this day, and the company is managed by Christian Dior's son, John Christian Dior.
